On July 5 we loaded up the car and drove to Jon's parents' home in Maryland, to have a brief visit and to celebrate Miles' 4th birthday with his grandparents. We got a bit of a treat on the way:

Miles had the first of his two birthday cakes in Maryland. This one he got to help Grandma bake! While I enjoyed a date with myself in Annapolis, getting a haircut and dawdling at Goodwill. What bliss.

There was a happy trip to the air-conditioned mall with its many attractions for kids, and a couple of nights of much needed rest, before, on July 7, we hit the road again.
